Tips for using the Word Analyzer Tool:

Definitions
The Word Analyzer Tool provides brief definitions for the 4000 most frequent words in English texts. When using these definitions for instruction, make sure to select the definition for the word as it is used in the text so that the definition and part of speech are consistent.
Cognates
Cognates are words in two languages that sound similar, have a similar spelling, and share meaning. False cognates are words that sound similar, have a similar spelling, but do not share meaning. The Word Analyzer Tool provides information on whether or not a highlighted word is a cognate, false cognate, or non-cognate in Spanish. Explicitly highlighting cognates may help Spanish speakers acquire these words. When using texts with false cognates, make sure to tell students that the word may look like a word in Spanish, but it actually has a different definition.
Imagability scores
The Word Analyzer Tool provides an imagability score for the 4000 most frequent words in English texts. An imagability score refers to how easy it is to visualize a word based upon its conceptual complexity. Words with an imagability score of 1 are easier to visualize; words with an imagability score of 4 are more difficult to visualize. Words that are more imagable can be taught using pictures, actions, or gestures, but words that are less imagable may need more explanation and multiple examples.
